Primary-School Beginners
Lessons for Primary-School aged children focus on developing all aspects of music development and have students playing pieces on the piano from the very first lesson. Our lessons include learning in different ways to encourage reading, playing and understanding music from day one. Lessons include learning aurally, physically and visually to help develop different aspects of playing simultaneously. Most importantly students will have a new piece or two to play at home straight away.
Older Beginners
Older beginners can cover a lot of musical concepts very quickly. They often come to lessons with a good understanding and feel for things such as beat and rhythm and just need labels to go with them and the tools to enjoy them on a conscious level. It is really important to ensure access to enjoyable music at older ages to maintain interest and motivation in lessons. Personal music choices are encouraged alongside teacher chosen repertoire to ensure students enjoy the music they are learning to make. Formal goals often become important at this age to stay motivated in their practise.
Parents play an integral role in learning the piano. You will need to be actively involved during younger children’s lessons and practise. Don’t panic, you don’t need to play the role of teacher at home but rather provide the encouragement (and reminders!) for children to practise. Practise is best done at the same time of day and for the younger players parents will need to sit with children to help them read their practise diary and walk them through the process. As children learn more your role will become less hands on and shift more to support and encouragement than active assistance. Please note that even children who are keen learners have not yet developed the organisation skills to be left to their own volition. They will always need reminders to practise and to keep them focused.
Transfer students of all ages and levels are welcomed at Musical Interludes. If you have had previous piano lessons we will do an assessment during the first lesson so that we can plan the best course for your piano education going forwards.
I believe music is to be played and enjoyed. I aim to instill a love of music and music making in my students so they remain musicians for life whether it be for their own personal pleasure or for that of an audience.
