Learning music theory is so valuable to the developing pianist. The fundamentals of music theory are incorporated into all piano lessons at they present themselves through repertoire and progress but there is so much more to learn from theory than can be achieved within the piano lesson itself.

Why Learn Music Theory? 

It helps students understand how music works.  

Learning theory helps students recognise patterns, sequences both within a single piece but also across styles of repertoire. Quick recognition of these patterns assists with development of reading skills, enables faster learning which creates a cycle of success and enjoyment. 

It helps students to become independent learners  

The overall goal of Musical Interludes is to provide a lifelong love and enjoyment of music. Becoming an independent learner enables students to pursue music outside the lesson and teach themselves new pieces and work out learning strategies without guidance. This promotes confidence in their abilities, fosters a sense of accomplishment and encourages further learning.  

It helps children compose their own music  

Understanding how music works, ability to read and recognise music structure provides a baseline for students to experiment with their own compositions. It gives the freedom to become adaptable, personalise performances and even write their own music.
